Roy Morgan's research shows that while Foxtel, Disney+ and Amazon Prime Video showed strong growth in viewer numbers during 2021, Netflix is still the top dog.

Entertainment on demand is already a well-established service in the US and UK, and client demand has driven its expansion in Germany, and next in Australia, according to data, brands, and insights research firm Kantar.

Foxtel has announced the addition of the Netflix app to the Foxtel Now box "offering subscribers the ability to experience even more great entertainment all in one place, at the best value".

Foxtel is now directing its customers previously using the Foxtel Now mobile app to its Foxtel GO app which it says will give mobile phone or tablet users a simplified experience with the best of TV and on demand in one place.

Foxtel shocks with its new $99 Android-powered Box, designed to be "an affordable and easy-to-use device designed to stream the best choice of the world’s biggest new shows, live sport and complete seasons to consumers’ TVs".

Telstra has unveiled new post-paid and pre-paid mobile plans as it moves to put the focus on data and entertainment packages in the wake of what the telco says is 40% growth in video traffic every year.

Telstra has partnered with Foxtel to offer mobile customers 12 months free access to content packs from online streaming service, Foxtel Now.   

Foxtel's revenue has fallen by 2% for the last financial year to A$3 billion because of lower subscriber numbers, according to its annual report issued last week.

Just days before Game of Thrones Season 7 starts on 17 July, the Foxtel Now app has arrived on Playstation 4 in time for HD Game of Thrones.

Game of Thrones Season 7 is about to start, airing on 17 July at 11am (same as the US), with the “encore” airing 8.30pm AEDT the same day.

Foxtel has launched Foxtel Now and has no doubt it will shake up the Australian streaming video-on-demand market.
